Time: Wednesday 17.9.2008 at 9:00 - 10:45 AM Place: project meeting space at AgC223.1 Present: * Tommi Teistelä * Teemu Nisu, chairman * Tuomas Mäenpää * Richard Domander, secretary * Matthieu Weber * Ville Isomöttönen Minutes 1. Opening and confirmation of the presence of quorum Chairman Teemu Nisu opened the meeting at 09:00. Presence of quorum was confirmed. 2. Approval of agenda Agenda was approved. 3. Attendees introduce themselves Everybody introduced themselves. Present from the project team were Tommi Teistelä, Tuomas Mäenpää, Teemu Nisu who was the chairman and Richard Domander who was the secretary. Present from the faculty of MIT was Ville Isomöttönen. The client, Mattihieu Weber, was also present. 4. Review of the project schedule The project can take at most 4 months, and must be finished by the end of January 2009. The students have enough time in their personal schedules for the project. Iterative process model and white board design were discussed with 1 week intervals (iteration zero) at first and 2 week intervals from thereon. Ville Isomöttönen mentioned good results attained from previous projects. He also recommended that students spend time together in the project room. 5. The client presents the subject MPlayer is a multi platform software which plays many formats. Matthieu Weber coded support for DVB subtitles, black frame detection and search for MPEG TS for an older version of MPlayer in 2005. MPlayer's architecture has changed since then. The purpose of the project is to port these features (or write equivalent) for the newest (stable) version of MPlayer. Support for DVB subtitles was discussed, it is one of the main requirements. Black frame detection is used to skip commercials. First the program searches the black frames from a recording, marks the timestamps into a text file, and then jumps over when the recording is played. The existing search in MPlayer doesn't work with Finnish TV, because the stream doesn't have (the advertised) fixed bit rate. There's also the "26 hour problem" i.e. the time stamp resets. The legacy code averages bitrate over time and uses the average to jump. Weber can provide MPEG and DVB specs. 6. Discussion about the subject and its implementation. Acronym suggestion and mention of project leader Mattihieu presented MPlayer source code and his old patches to the team, and the following points were discussed: DVB subtitle support has to be for "bitmap subtitles" only (YLE channels). Tommi had already began to read the source code, and according to him some DVB implementation can be already found from libav. Matthieu said that the team can use it in the implementation if it's found applicable. Black frame detection was accurate enough in the old version, audio inspection (silent black frame) need not be implemented. Black frame detection (implemented as an MPlayer video filter) should work "as is". Search is tied with skipping commercials, because without accurate search some of actual programming may be skipped. Matthieu estimated that seeking MPEG TS is probably the most difficult to implement. Tuomas Mäenpää announced that he is the project leader. Ville proposed that the students sign a commitment to set the project results (code) under GPL. Participants agreed. Project team is free to use legacy code. Decisions: * Project acronym is "Muksis" 7. Decision of next tasks for the participants The team: * will begin to examine MPlayer and legacy code. * They should also check that MPlayer compiles on their computers * Check that they have all the necessary software. * In the next meeting the team tries to give a presentation of the general architecture and inner workings of MPlayer. The client: * Sends a link to legacy code The supervisor: * Creates e-mail list 8. Miscellaneous topics Project team got Matthieu Weber's contact information. Team announced it will use SVN and Trac, and that all materials can be found from there. Decisions: * Project plan and other documents must be in PDF-format and created with LaTeX. * Minutes must be delivered within 3 days after the meeting * Agenda must be delivered at least 1 work day before the meeting * Other materials must be delivered at least 2 work days before the meeting * All documents must be in English 9. Decision of the time and place for the next meeting Decisions: * Next meeting will be held on Wednesday 24.9. at 09:00 at project meeting space 10. Closing Chairman closed the meeting at 10:45
